Cowboy Spirit: Battle of the Bands 2010 funded 10 student scholarships. Below are the stories of two of these students.
Madison is a future educator but her real passion is making the world a better place by being a positive influence on the lives of others. She has experienced this positive influence not only from her friends and family but also from her peers at OSU.
“What I enjoy most about OSU is the camaraderie between students,” Madison said. “I have loved meeting other students from different places; my best friends come from all over the United States now.”
But it’s not just the students she has met that have influenced her life. In fall 2010 she received the Cowboy Spirit Scholarship, which was funded through the generous donations of her peers. The scholarship has allowed her to finish her degree with less financial stress and worry.
“This award is so special because it proves that we can make the lives of our peers better by helping each other,” Madison said. “It truly has inspired me to work harder so that one day I can pay it forward.”

“The fact that this is primarily a student-initiated scholarship and is funded by students shows me that OSU is such a great place that people want to give back before they have even left. Brady Selig |
Brady is eager to begin his career helping others as a doctor. When he set out to choose where he would get his undergraduate education, he decided that OSU was the best place for him. One of the primary reasons for this was the heart of the campus.
“People at OSU are some of the nicest people I have ever met. I can honestly say I have never met so many genuinely nice people at one place,” Brady said.
Brady learned first-hand that not only where his peers friendly, but they were also generous, giving back to the university to provide a scholarship for him. The Cowboy Spirit Scholarship has given Brady funds to cover his expenses during his last year at OSU and inspired him to give back to the campus that has given him so much.
“OSU has been more than I could ever ask for in an undergraduate institution. The best way to show my gratitude is to give back and make it possible for other students to gain the same experience and opportunities that I was afforded,” Brady said.
